My grandmother came to live with us just after that because my grandad died shortly after my dad did. We had some great times with her, she was full of fun and when she was about 80 years old she did something that I’ll never forget. She was besotted with the singer Paul Anka and she went on her own to watch him at the Odeon Cinema in Manchester. She sat through two shows of him singing and didn’t come home until 11pm. We’d been so worried about her when cool as a cucumber, calm as you like, in she strolls, singing his songs without a care in the world.

I’m glad to say that his story can now be told. The name of the book, Catch A Falling Star, is also the title of one of Neil’s favourite songs. As you’ll discover shortly, Neil enjoyed the highlife in his pomp, he sampled the nightclubs and he loved being appreciated by the City fans because he was one of them himself - to this day he has the club in his heart. There have been some desperately sad times too and only now does Neil feel the time is right to lift the lid on some of these periods in his life.

Much later on I became a good long distance runner.  I had the bug. I developed good stamina. My favourite discipline was running the half-mile for Manchester Athletics Club. Other than that, break times, lunch times and after school – in fact all day every day would be spent playing football. I’d play a match for the junior school once a week and then I’d play other matches on a Wednesday and a Saturday. We used to play in Platt Fields Park but we also used to climb over the iron gates into the car park there and play on the tarmac.
