The effect of energy intake during late pregnancy on the production from two genotypes of suckler cow. Anim. Prod. B. Chestnutt Agricultural Research Institute, Hillsborough, Co. Down, N. Ireland. ABSTRACT Autumn-calving suckler cows can make large gains at grass when feed cost is low, and the resulting body reserves can be used to reduce winter feed costs. Cows which gained 138 kg at grass between mid-April and the end of August and lost 100 kg over the winter, produced calves which were 28 kg lighter in June than cows which gained 25 kg between April and August and a further 13 kg over the winter.

Jordan, Lister and Rowlands (1968a and b) using cows similar to those used in the present studies, have shown that with winter weight losses of up to 100 kg (20% of body weight) cow liveweights at the end of the grazing season were only slightly less than those recorded 12 months earlier. In that study losses of 60 to 70 kg in winter were completely recovered at weaning when compared with their counterparts fed a high plane of nutrition in winter, and yearly weight gains were about 18 kg. In the present studies there was no effect of pre-calving level of nutrition on milk yield of the cows, calf birth weight or growth rates.
