But then two of my cousins came to live with us. Their mother was mum’s sister and they were quite a bit older than me. It seemed that they could have new clothes whenever they wanted, even though we couldn’t, and the unfairness of it made me cry. I must have made my dislike of them very obvious because one of them started telling Mum stories about things I’d done or not done.

It was as if she believed everything that happened around her was part of a plot to steal her money and make her life more difficult than it already was. In fact her life was extremely easy as far as I could see. I knew she looked down on my mother and the rest of my family, believing that she was something better, but she was the only family member I knew who would be in a position to offer me a wage. In a way I suppose that did give her an advantage over the rest of us. She wasn’t rich but she knew how to make money and, more importantly, she knew how to hang on to it.

But she’s just a child,’ the husband was saying. ‘We can at least give her a chance,’ his wife suggested. ‘We can hardly send her all the way back. Maybe she’ll be a fast learner. ’ I slept all through the first day and when I woke up I was worried they would think I was lazy and sack me before I’d even started.
