All Indians aged eighteen or older have the right to vote. Many of the people I knew exercised this right, and almost all of them held strong political opinions. Women usually accede to men (either their husbands or fathers) in their expressed opinions and party allegiance; many married women say that they leave those choices up to their husband. Most people are aware of at least some of the main policies of the party they vote for in 1985-87, many cited, for example, MGR's school lunch and uniforms program as evidence that "he helps people like us" - but few have in-depth knowledge of the party's past or present political record.

Non-public behavior often correlates more closely with the second or third. Young people look forward to marriage in an idealized way, and openly fantasize about future spouses with friends and schoolmates. Despite their lack of control over choice of partner, they dream romantically of handsome and beautiful mates. This seems to be especially the case with young women, for whom the wedding - specifically, for Hindu women, the essential act within it of tying the thali16 - is the central event of their lives.
