So if the hypothesis has anything to it, it will be a question of relating the timing of cell multiplication in one particular area, and the ultimate deficit, to the timing of the growth restriction. This could also lead to a study of what controls DNA synthesis or cell division.

Other factors must be involved. Dobbing: Nutrition is one of many factors that can retard growth. Infectious disease interacts with this effect on growth, as it probably does on mental development. Thus, if there are better hospitals in Sardinia and a better public health service, this itself would lead to better growth achievement.
