Another reason was the complexity of developing such measures of the family. Gilliss (1983) supported this issue stating that research on the family was complicated by difficulties of measuring the aggregate and its component parts. There was lack of agreement as to what should be measured as well as to how both the parts and the sum should be measured (Aldous, 1978; Feetham, 1981; Gilliss, 1983). Some answers to the methodological issues may come from the development of full conceptual or theoretical nursing models that identify the family as both the central unit and the context for the behaviors of the individual members.
