They bring this to adulthood. It can also mean that the self-system of the child was never allowed to develop normally, so that he becomes an emotional slave to meet the narcissistic needs of the parent. This emotional neglect sows the seeds of fear, low self-esteem, shame and anger, which one day will emerge as a poisonous bloom. This adult may then exhibit extreme selfishness, lack of empathy, a tendency to control, being negative, using others, aggression, and a whole host of other undesirable characteristics and behaviours, including codependent behaviours.

No wonder Linda was taken in! One day Stephen rang me and told me that a member of his extended family had a house for sale near home. He was so excited about it; he wanted us to think about selling up where we are and move down to where he is from. He said that the house is in the country and we could raise our child in the country and bring the child for walks.
